Bharata Kund is situated about twenty kilometers from Ayodhya. In Hindu sacred texts, it is said that Bharat ruled the kingdom named Kosal during Ram’s 14-year exile. The most religiously significant site at Bharata Kund is Jatakund which is said to be the place where Laxman and Lord Ram had their first haircut after coming out of exile. Jatakund has become a very famous place for visitors, especially followers of the Hindu religion.
Bharat Kund rests beside a river. The river is one of the bodies of water where the Hindu ritual for the dearly departed called Asthi Visarjan is performed. In this Hindu religious obligation, the ashen remains and bones of the deceased are immersed and scattered by family in any of the holy rivers in India. One such river flows by Bharat Kund. Throughout the year, people arrive at this location to perform the Asthi Visarjan ritual for deceased family members, as well as pay homage to their ancestors.
One of the most culturally significant sites in Bharata Kund is the main temple of Shri Bharat Hanuman Milan mandir. It houses two levels that are replete with historical grandeur. Statues of Lord Hanuman and Lord Bharat are found on the temple’s underground level, as well as the footwear of Lord Rama known as the Charan Paduka. More temples are found surrounding the main temple. People from all over come to this place to have the Asthi Visarjan ritual for the dearly departed performed for their families, as well as to perform Shraadh Pooja.
